Hearings, rules & legal updates that can affect workers.
Start with official sources. Filter by jurisdiction, worker group, topic, and update type. RECEIPTS reports status and sources without telling people what position to take.
Use this to create a focused legal-update search. Assisted research can search more deeply when your plan allows it; the official source links below work without a subscription.
Choose what you want to track. Saved filters stay on this device.
Live official update desks
These links open current official government pages. A hearing, proposal, lawsuit, guidance document, or enforcement action is not automatically the same thing as enacted law.
RECEIPTS social posts should keep the same source-first structure as the site: what happened → who may be affected → where it applies → current status → official source → what to watch next.
A proposal stays labeled as a proposal. A hearing stays labeled as a hearing. A court filing stays labeled as a filing unless an official ruling changes the status.
Launch scope
This version gives RECEIPTS a reliable official-source update hub and targeted briefing search without auto-publishing unreviewed government material. Automatic monitoring and scheduled alerts can be added after launch without changing the core research flow.
HOW RECEIPTS WORKS

Use normal words. RECEIPTS organizes the question, checks official records, shows what the evidence supports, and keeps the source trail visible.
1
Tell us what happened
Type the situation or question in your own words. You do not need legal terms.
2

3

Keep the official record, evidence, plain-English explanation, and next things to check together.
What RECEIPTS is for
RECEIPTS is an evidence-first legal-information research tool. Its core job is to check claims and questions against official records and explain what those records support. AI is optional and separate: it may help explain or expand research, but it does not create or change a source-backed RECEIPTS status. RECEIPTS does not provide legal representation or replace advice from a qualified professional.
Three federal branches. Different powers. Shared checks.
Use this guide to understand which part of government does what, then open the constitutional or official source behind it.
Informational only: this section explains government structure and official records. It does not tell anyone how to vote or what political position to take.
ARTICLE I · LEGISLATIVE
Congress
The legislative branch is Congress: the House of Representatives and the Senate.
Considers and passes federal legislation.
Controls federal appropriations through laws.
The Senate has constitutional advice-and-consent roles for certain nominations and treaties.
Article II vests executive power in the President. The executive branch also includes departments, agencies, and other officials established under federal law.
Executes and administers federal law.
The President can sign or veto legislation presented by Congress.
The President nominates certain officers and judges, subject to constitutional Senate roles.
Walk through the process one stage at a time. Every step has an official source and an Ask RECEIPTS shortcut. When you ask, your return path brings you back to the same place.
The Constitution divides federal power and gives branches different ways to check one another. The exact check depends on the power involved.
LEGISLATION
Congress ↔ President
Congress passes bills. The President may sign or veto them. Congress may override a veto with the constitutionally required supermajorities.
NOMINATIONS
President ↔ Senate
The President nominates certain federal officers and judges; the Senate has an advice-and-consent role for covered nominations.
CONSTITUTIONAL REVIEW
Courts ↔ Government action
Federal courts decide constitutional questions in cases within their jurisdiction and can hold laws or government actions unconstitutional.
LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT
Federal, state, and local are not the same source.
FEDERAL
United States
Federal authority comes from the U.S. Constitution and federal law. Congress, federal executive agencies, and federal courts operate at this level.
STATE
States & territories
States have their own constitutions, legislatures, executive officials, agencies, statutes, regulations, and court systems. Structure and powers vary by state.
LOCAL
Counties, cities & towns
Local government structure varies under state law. Local ordinances, agencies, and services can control issues that are not answered by federal law alone.
Use the guide when you want the big picture. Use Ask RECEIPTS when you want to check a specific question. Your return path stays visible so you do not lose your place.
This is a simplified federal path. House and Senate procedures can differ, and a particular bill may take a different procedural route before both chambers agree to final text.
Official-source guide: the steps below summarize the federal legislative process using the U.S. Constitution, U.S. House, U.S. Senate, and USAGov. It is civic information, not political advice.
An idea can come from many places, but a federal bill is formally introduced by a Member of the House or Senate. The bill receives a number such as H.R. or S.
What this means: an introduced bill is a proposal. It is not a law yet.
Committees can study, discuss, hold hearings, and make changes to legislation. A committee may report a bill for further consideration, or the bill may not advance.
What this means: committee action is part of the process; referral alone is not passage.
After the chamber's procedures are satisfied, the House or Senate may debate, amend, and vote on the measure. Passing one chamber does not make the bill a law.
Checkpoint: House passage and Senate passage are separate events.
The House and Senate must agree to identical text.
If the chambers pass different versions, they must resolve the differences. That can happen through amendments or, in some cases, a conference process. Both chambers then approve the same final text.
Checkpoint: two different chamber versions are not yet ready for the President.
Article I, Section 7 controls the final constitutional paths.
The President may sign the bill or veto it. If a veto is returned, Congress can attempt an override; two-thirds of each chamber is required. If the President does not return the bill within 10 days, Sundays excepted, it becomes law unless congressional adjournment prevents its return; in that circumstance it does not become law through that path.
Important: “the President did not sign it” does not always mean the same outcome. Timing and congressional adjournment matter.
Once enacted, the measure is a law—not merely a bill that passed.
Enacted federal laws receive public-law or private-law numbers and are published as slip laws and in the Statutes at Large. Many provisions are later organized in the United States Code.
RECEIPTS rule: chamber passage, final congressional passage, and enactment are different statuses and should be shown separately.
Every Ask button on this page remembers where you were. Each step also has a clearly labeled Official source button. After RECEIPTS shows the source-backed answer, use the return button at the top of the answer card to come back to this step.
You can use RECEIPTS' core official-source tools without AI. Optional AI can help explain or expand research, but it cannot create or change a source-backed RECEIPTS status.
CORE RECEIPTSOfficial records → evidence → status → plain-English explanation. This is the verification layer.
OPTIONAL AIExtra explanation, rewording, and deeper research when enabled. It stays separate from the source-backed status.

Official records are the foundation. RECEIPTS helps you understand what they prove.
RECEIPTS is not trying to replace Congress.gov, GovInfo, court databases, or broad legal research sites. Its core verification flow does not depend on AI: ask a normal question, see the source-backed result in plain English, then open the evidence and official records behind it. Optional AI tools are separate.
1. Ask normallyUse everyday words instead of knowing a bill number, court citation, or legal term first.
2. Separate fact from claimRECEIPTS labels what the available evidence verifies, contradicts, leaves unresolved, or needs more context.
3. Follow the proofOpen the underlying official or primary sources instead of being asked to trust a summary by itself.
How nearby research sites differ
These services overlap with parts of RECEIPTS, but they are built for different jobs.
OFFICIAL FEDERAL LEGISLATION
Congress.gov
Best at: official federal bill text, status, actions, members, committees, and legislative records.
RECEIPTS adds: a question-first plain-English layer that can explain what a bill status means and keep House passage, Senate passage, and enactment separate.
The difference in one sentence: RECEIPTS is the layer between a person's everyday question and the source record that can actually support the answer.
Comparison descriptions summarize the public purposes of these services and are not endorsements or claims of affiliation. RECEIPTS is independent of the sites listed above. Descriptions last reviewed September 2026.
